One-day qualifying tournaments will be held in all 50 states, with each winning two-person team advancing to national finals in Las Vegas for a chance to win $50,000.
TPG Sports Group has announced the U.S. Golf Classic (USGC), presented by Pitchfix, a national, winner-take-all, cash-prize tournament where the winning twosome will bring home $50,000.
The organizers describe the tournament as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for recreational golfers of all skill levels looking to participate in a high-stakes, professionally run and organized golf tournament.”
Any golfer, 21 years of age and older, is eligible to register for the tournament. Tournament organizers say that the USGC will utilize a handicap system to ensure a competitive tournament for the entire field and an even playing field for all participants. Teams can be made up of any combination of men, women, or seniors (age 60 and over).
All 50 U.S. states will host a one-day qualifying tournament in May 2017, with the winning two-person team in each state advancing to the USGC National Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., to be held at Aliante Golf Club on August 26, 2017.
“We wanted to create a platform for all golfers to be able to compete and win a cash prize, no matter their skill level,” says Charlie Wend, Vice President of TPG Sports Group. “We’re very excited from the response we’ve received so far from the recreational golf community [and even] retired professional athletes, all looking to compete on an even playing field.”
The format of the U.S. Golf Classic will be a two-person best-ball, with teams consisting of two players who will count their single lowest net score on each hole. Handicaps will be taken into account for all qualifying and championship rounds. Depending on each golfer’s handicap, strokes will be applied before the round where they fall on corresponding holes.
“Pitchfix is excited to team up with TPG Sports Group as a presenting sponsor of the inaugural U.S. Golf Classic,” said Bart Fokke, CEO of the company that will be a “presenting partner” of the tournament. “We see the U.S. Golf Classic attracting top recreational golfers throughout the United States and familiarizing them with our high-quality ball-mark repair tools and golf accessories.”
