The Philip Anschutz family has acquired Sea Island (Ga.) Resort from the family’s three co-investors, obtaining sole ownership of the retreat, the Oklahoma City-based Oklahoman reported.
Located on the southeastern coast of Georgia, Sea Island features three championship golf courses and a multitude of amenities including five miles of private beach, a beach club, tennis and squash centers, yacht club and shooting school. C&RB featured the property in its July 2015 cover story.
Executives with Anschutz family businesses say the acquisition of Sea Island is expected to complement the family’s previous acquisition of The Broadmoor, located in Colorado Springs, Colo. With the latest acquisition, the family now owns two iconic independent resorts with a combined 186-year history of excellence in hospitality for the discerning traveler, the Oklahoman reported.
Sea Island was founded in 1928 and is the only resort in the world to have received four Forbes Five-Star awards for eight consecutive years. The Broadmoor, founded in 1918, is the longest consecutive recipient of a Forbes Five-Star award in the world, the Oklahoman reported.
“The complementary nature of our two resorts and, more importantly, the cultural similarities, will create an opportunity to enhance the guest experience at each of our destinations,” said Scott Steilen, president of Sea Island. “I have long admired The Broadmoor’s operation and look forward to working together to elevate the broad array of offerings we each promote.”
Steve Bartolin, chairman of The Broadmoor, said the acquisition opens up many possibilities, the Oklahoman reported.
“Rarely does an opportunity come along that creates a marriage of two unique five-star resort destinations with such a wide range of offering and experiences,” Bartolin said. “From a world-class golf performance center and horseback riding on the beach at Sea Island to zip lining and fly fishing on private waters at The Broadmoor, and accommodations ranging from the warmth of an old English manor at The Lodge at Sea Island to a view of the mountains and valleys atop Cloud Camp at The Broadmoor, the array of offerings at these two resort properties is unparalleled.
“While the diversity of the ocean and the mountains creates uniquely different guest experiences, what truly bonds these two legendary resorts together is the unwavering commitment to world class service and facilities.”
The Anschutz family owns The Oklahoma Publishing Company, which publishes The Oklahoman. The family has a wide variety of other business interests, including ownership of professional sports teams, sports and entertainment venues, movie theaters and hospitality enterprises that operate in America’s national parks, the Oklahoman reported.
