Dell computers and HTC Vive, a virtual reality system, will be bringing a zero-gravity golfing experience to PGA Tour championship events this season, through Dell’s video-game PC brand, Alienware.
Dell computers’ video-game PC brand, Alienware, will be powering “Lunar Golf: The Future of Golf Experience” on HTC Vive, a virtual reality (VR) system, in a traveling VR experience that will visit PGA Tour world golf championship events this season, Fortune magazine reported.
“Lunar Golf” takes place in a custom inflatable dome, which features 360-degree, projection-mapped visuals of the moon, Fortune reported. Once attendees put on a headset, they’re transported inside a rover for a ride across the moon to the golfing location.
After selecting a club, the user gets to swing four times as they perform their best impersonation of Alan Shepard, the astronaut who first hit a golf ball on the moon in 1971. Up to four users can experience golfing on the moon at once, Fortune reported.
Bryan Jones, Vice President of North America Commercial Marketing at Dell, said that hitting golf balls on the moon has long been an iconic moment in history, Fortune reported, and Dell wants everyone to experience that moment through virtual reality.
Dell is currently exploring additional events to demonstrate Lunar Golf, Fortune reported. The company has also upgraded the technology that allowed 3D Live, a technology company, to create the experience.
“We worked closely with 3D Live to create the most realistic golf movements possible,” Jones said. “We were involved in the early conception, and equipped 3D Live with Dell Precision Workstations to build the experience.”
