For some, camping in the great outdoors can be a stressful endeavor, requiring extensive planning and expensive equipment. To simplify the process while giving guests a more comfortable experience, The Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pa., debuted its “glamping” (glamorous camping) amenity in August 2015.
“Part of our brand is to embrace the outdoors, and what better way than to glamp?” says General Manager Robert Howell. “Some people find camping to be daunting—set-up, take-down, loss of conveniences. Glamping takes most of those away and allows you to experience a night outdoors enjoying the night sky, campfire, s’mores, friends and family.”
Last year, Shawnee Inn offered four Island glamping sites, which are itinerary-driven and include a glamping concierge. The area is secluded, reachable only by canoe, and the pitched tents are approximately 20 feet away from each other. The tents are positioned on raised decks, and come equipped with beds, high-speed WiFi, electricity, shared men’s and women’s restrooms with showers, and hammocks.
The Island package, which costs $320 per couple, per night, includes the canoe trips to and from the site, campfire, beer, wine and/or soda, breakfast, and gratuities. Campers are free to arrive early to enjoy a hike, spa service, or round of golf.
For 2016, the resort has added two more glamping sites on the property’s North Lawn, called Riverside. The sites are less secluded but still private, and within walking distance to the inn, allowing for more multiple-night stays and giving guests the ability to come and go as they please with full access to the resort amenities.
So far, Howell says, guests who want to glamp have been “all over the map,” from families introducing their kids to nature, to couples celebrating their anniversaries, to “girls’ getaways” that combine a winery tour with spa services.
The glamping sites at the resort sold out in 2015. Those who use them “love it,” Howell says. “We have received rave reviews from the time spent out glamping.”
