The club will demolish more than half of its clubhouse, reducing from 22,000 sq. ft. to 8,000 sq. ft., and remove the swimming pool and tennis courts. The 26 member-owners are investing $800,000 into the renovation, which could be complete by Thanksgiving.
Muskogee (Okla.) Country Club is getting smaller as it focuses more on golf, demolishing more than half of its clubhouse, as well as its swimming pool and tennis courts. The club also is filling in a basement, the Muskogee Phoenix reported.
“The new owners are renaming and rebranding it,” said Mike Ross, one of the club’s 26 member-owners.
Muskogee Country Club will become a golf club, featuring dining and meeting facilities. Parts of the clubhouse were in poor shape, “we needed a new roof,” and the basement leaked and took “several thousands of dollars to repair,” Ross said.
Club owners are investing $800,000 to demolish and renovate the clubhouse. The size will go from 22,000 sq. ft. to 8,800 sq. ft., the Phoenix reported.
“We’ll have an Irish pub with a nice bar, new men’s and women’s locker rooms,” Ross said. “It will be a total renovation.”
Owners hope the renovations would be finished by Thanksgiving, he said. Then, the club can embark on a new membership campaign, the Phoenix reported.
Muskogee Country Club currently has 280 members, Ross said. “Many, many years ago we had 600,” he said. “We’ve been holding at 250 to 300 members for the past several years.”
The new member-owners have operated the club for about three years, the Phoenix reported.
“They’re all members, all local people who put money up to save the club,” Ross said. “We have the nicest golf course in the area and the oldest course in Oklahoma. It’s good, clean family entertainment, a great place for a quiet business lunch.”
The renovation and rebranding are the first phase of the club’s makeover. A second phase, which could start next spring, could include townhomes near the golf course entrance. The townhomes would include golf club membership and will have a new pool, Ross said.
