Few details are available about the planned golf course at The Greenbrier Sporting Club in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., other than the names of the four legendary co-designers and that it will be private. A name for the golf course and a completion date have not been determined.
Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player are co-designers of a new golf course at The Greenbrier Sporting Club in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., the Charleston (W. Va.) State Journal reported.
“The thing that excites me is we have a new golf course coming in,” said Trevino, who is the new Golf Pro Emeritus at The Greenbrier Resort. “It borders Oakhurst (Links). We have 1,000 acres there that [Greenbrier owner Jim] Justice just bought.”
It’s a rare feat the Mountain State will be able to boast, according to Trevino. “For the first time in the history of the game, the four of us will collaborate together on building this course,” Trevino said. “First time that it’s ever been done.”
The course doesn’t have an official name yet, but Trevino hinted the four designers will be incorporated somehow, the State Journal reported.
“We’ve been horsing around with a name,” he said.
The course will be private, available only to Greenbrier Sporting Club members. There will be about 200-250 homes sites available on it. Also, there hasn’t been a date set for completion, the State Journal reported.
“But knowing Mr. Justice, he wants it open next week,” Trevino said with a laugh. “We were all in a van (June 13) and Mr. Justice told Jack (Nicklaus), ‘I’d like to play on this (new course) next summer.’ And Jack says, ‘That’s not going to happen.’ And Mr. Justice says, ‘You know, I have ways of doing things quite fast.’ And Jack still says, ‘It’s not going to happen.’
“He told Jack, ‘They told me that it was going to take us 10 months to open the (Greenbrier) Casino (Club), and we got it done much sooner.’”
Trevino said the golf legends all are “very excited about it,” the State Journal reported.
“This is truly a great day for The Greenbrier and West Virginia,” Justice said in a news release. “America’s first golf course was at The Greenbrier and this new course will be a first in its kind by bringing these legendary players together.”
The new golf resort will break ground within 30 days and has a scheduled opening for fall 2016, the State Journal reported.
“It was a hard task to get these four to collaborate on a new course, but it is my hope that this new course will help attract the U.S. Open to West Virginia someday,” Justice said. “People never believed we could bring the PGA back to West Virginia, but we did. People never believed that we could attract NFL teams to The Greenbrier, but we did.”
