The property’s clubhouse burned to the ground in March, but the golf course, pro shop and snack bar on the other side of the road are open and undamaged. Paul Forner was charged with aggravated arson in May in connection with the blaze.
Despite public misconception after its former clubhouse burned to the ground in March, Madison (Ohio) Country Club is open and ready for play, the Willoughby (Ohio)-based News-Herald reported.
The club’s Director of Operations, Kevin Leymaster, said there are plenty of potential customers who mistakenly link the fate of the golf course to that of the former clubhouse across the street, the News-Herald reported.
“I get the question all the time, ‘Is the course still open?’ ” Leymaster said.
The clubhouse, open for nearly a century, burned to the ground in March. Authorities subsequently ruled the fire to have been caused by arson. Paul Forner was charged in May with aggravated arson and disrupting a public service in connection with the fire, the Cleveland-based NewsNet 5 reported.
As devastating as the loss of the clubhouse had to be for Madison’s owner, Chardon businessman Rollin Cooke, the good news was no one was injured in the blaze, the News-Herald reported.
Better still for area golfers, no damage was done to the golf course, pro shop and snack bar on the other side of the road. “We haven’t missed a beat,” Leymaster said.
The course designed by Sandy Alves that welcomed its first players in 1923. Madison was a private course from its inception until it went into receivership in 2012. Cooke became the owner in January 2013, the News-Herald reported.
Leymaster credited superintendent Todd Bishop and his crew with getting the course and, especially, the greens, in tip-top shape, the News-Herald reported.
Madison has four sets of tees, ranging from a par 74 at 5,288 yards to par 71 at 6,487 yards. These days, the majority of players choose the gold (5,428 yards, par 71) and white (6,145 yards, par 71) tees, the News-Herald reported.
