Previously GM of Bayville GC in Virginia Beach, Va. and Assistant GM at Oakmont (Pa. CC), the fourth-generation club manager will return to his native Ohio in time to help the Westlake, Ohio club prepare for a Web.com tour event in June.
Lakewood Country Club, in Westlake, Ohio (suburban Cleveland) has named Christopher J. Hampton as its General Manager and Chief Operations Officer. Hampton most recently served as General Manager of Bayville Golf Club, Virginia Beach, Va., and prior to that was Assistant General Manager of Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. His experience at Oakmont included helping that club host the 2003 U.S. Amateur and 2007 U.S. Open.
Originally from Akron, Ohio, Hampton is a graduate of Kent State University, where he earned his Master’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management. He is a fourth-generation club manager; his father, Joel Hampton, was a former General Manager of both Mayfield Country Club and The Country Club on the east side of Cleveland, and his grandfather, Gifford Hampton, was a former General Manager of Portage Country Club in Akron.
In his new role at Lakewood CC, Hampton will be responsible for managing all day-to-day business and golf operations and club activities at a property that had a full tear-down and rebuild of its clubhouse in 2013. Hampton will also bring his experience with large golf events to help Westlake host the Web.com Rust-oleum Championship from June 8–14.
“I am excited to work with the Lakewood Country Club Board, the team at the club, and the PGA to showcase Lakewood Country Club on a national stage,” Hampton said. “As a fourth-generation club manager, my passion for this field runs deep, and one of my favorite things about this industry is making the club I am working at feel like an extension of the member’s home.”
Established in 1921, Lakewood CC features an 18-hole, A.W. Tillinghast-designed golf course as well as swimming, fitness center, tennis and dining/social facilities.
“We proudly welcome Christopher and are excited to open this new chapter for Lakewood,” said James Stroh, President of Lakewood CC’s Board of Directors. “He is highly respected in our field and we look forward to bringing his leadership, experience, and energy, to our membership.”
Hampton was introduced to Lakewood CC by Denehy Club Thinking Partners, which assisted the club in its General Manager search.
