Pinehurst Resort and Country Club President and COO Don Padgett II has announced his planned retirement, effective October 1, 2014. Tom Pashley, current Executive Vice President, has been named his successor.
Padgett came to Pinehurst as president in 2004 after a 25-year career with ClubCorp, most recently serving as General Manager of Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. He has worked for ClubCorp and the Dedman family for more than 35 years.
“Don Padgett has shown tremendous leadership and vision during his tenure as President,” said Bob Dedman, Pinehurst’s CEO and owner. “His significant contributions to both the property and the people of Pinehurst will leave a lasting legacy.”
Over the next 12 months, Padgett will continue to serve as resort president as well as general chairman of the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships. After retiring, he will continue working in a non-operating emeritus capacity. “With the upcoming U.S. Opens and exciting plans for the growth of our membership, I felt this was the right time to begin the transition for the future leadership of Pinehurst,” Padgett said.
Pashley has a long history at Pinehurst, beginning in 1996 as the resort’s first manager-in-development, a 12-month resort leadership development program. He then began working on the management team for the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open Championships. He was responsible for the record-setting corporate sales achieved at the 2005 U.S. Open as well Pinehurst’s successful corporate partnership program. For the past nine years he has led Pinehurst’s sales and marketing efforts.
“I feel privileged to assume this role at such an exciting time,” Pashley said. “We’re poised for growth in the coming years and have an incredible opportunity with the 2014 U.S. Opens. We earn our reputation each day by providing exceptional experiences for guests and members. That remains a constant focus.”
Pashley developed his passion for golf while growing up in Augusta, Ga., and learning the game on a local Donald Ross course. He first experienced Ross’ masterpiece, Pinehurst No. 2, in 1987 during a family visit to the resort. A graduate of the University of Georgia, he spent three years as a CPA with Deloitte & Touche in Atlanta. He moved to North Carolina in 1994 to obtain his MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University where he was actively involved with the men’s golf program.
Pashley is a past chairman of the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Convention & Visitors Bureau and has served as a member of the North Carolina Travel & Tourism Board.
