The Detroit-area club is also set to announce it will host the U.S. Amateur as part of its centennial in 2016; another U.S. Open would be its seventh, and first since 1996.
The Detroit News has reported, based on information obtained from “a source with knowledge of the situation.”that Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is in negotiations with the United States Golf Association to host the U.S. Open as early as 2020, which is the next available date for that major tournament.
Oakland Hills is also set to host the U.S. Amateur in 2016 and club officials will make that announcement on July 20, the source said. That event will coincide with the club’s centennial celebration for the club that was founded in 1916 and is home to the famous South Course nicknamed “The Monster” by 1951 Open champion Ben Hogan.
Oakland Hills last hosted the U.S. Amateur in 2002 and the U.S. Open in 1996. It also two events run by the PGA of America in the past decade—the Ryder Cup in 2004 and the PGA Championship in 2008 (“Full Throttle Performers,” C&RB, September 2008).
The U.S. Open has been at Oakland Hills six times, the last being in 1996. Only Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club (eight, including 2016) and Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. (seven) have hosted more.
