In response to the tragedy at Virginia Tech, that took the lives of 33 people, The Blacksburg (Va.) Country Club, located six miles from the school, will host a golf tournament on July 4. All revenues will go to the United in Caring Fund, crated by the local United Way, specifically to assist the surrounding community that has been touched by the tragedy.
In a letter dated May 30, 2007, Tom Duetsch, General Manager of Blacksburg CC, wrote:
As you know, words cannot express the sorrow and pain that so many went through in the aftermath of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. We have all been touched by tales of heroism, stories of talented and promising lives lost, and the emotional toll it has taken on the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities.
Many fundraising efforts have been organized to assist those affected by the tragedy, most notably the Hokie Spirit Fund, established by Virginia Tech. There is another fund, however, which has received less publicity, fewer donations, and deserves our support. Called the United in Caring Fund, it was created by the local United Way and is specifically
designed to assist the surrounding community, which has been deeply impacted by the tragedy. The fund has been established free of any United Way administrative fees, ensuring that 100% of the donations are used to directly benefit the community for mental health and other recovery-related services.
Recently, our club members and board of directors decided to give up our golf course and all revenues on July 4 to host a golf tournament and raise money for the United in Caring Fund. We have decided to tie this event to a fundraising auction the night before and we are looking for assistance with donated items that can be auctioned. Already the PGA has
stepped forward with many items, including Ryder Cup and PGA Championship tickets. I am asking that you consider donating rounds of golf with cart fees waived for a foursome if your guest policy would allow unaccompanied play at your club. If you are not able to do this, but are willing to donate in another way, including a hole sponsorship, we would be most grateful. I know that those of us who have donated packages to the silent auction at CMAA conferences in the past have been pleasantly surprised at the amount of money that was raised for the Club Foundation. I am hopeful that this will accomplish the same goal for our community.
I hope you will consider supporting this tremendous event. If you decide that you would be willing to assist with our efforts, please complete the form below and fax to me at 540-552-0461. You can also email [email protected]. Thanks in advance for your consideration of our request in support of the Blacksburg and Virginia Tech communities.
Respectfully,
Tom Duetsch, CCM
